Understanding and Calculating Your Zakat Obligation
Zakat is one of the Five Pillars of Islam. It is an obligation for all Muslims who have reached the age of maturity and possess wealth above a certain threshold (Nisab) for one lunar year.
Zakat is 2.5% of the value of your property and money paid to the needy and poor. It is a charity Allah has obligated upon Muslims who meet the obligatory criteria of wealth after a lunar year has passed.
Zakat serves as a social safety net for those in need, a way to improve the quality of life for everyone, and a way to support the advancement of Muslims and Islam. When appropriately implemented, zakat ought to have a long-term effect on the condition of the entire Muslim population.
